PAR stands for “photosynthetically active radiation”, a measure of the available light as needed by plants performing photosynthesis. A PAR meter measures the quantity/quality of light available to a plant, taking the guesswork out of whether a tank has sufficient light to grow plants successfully. (In contrast, other light measurements such as "lumens" refer the light intensity as seen by the human eye, which can differ significantly from the type and quantity of light plants need to grow.)

RAS has an Apogee MQ-510 PAR meter available for loan to its members. Because of the high cost of the device (> $500), members are expected to put down a $250 deposit, which is fully refundable upon return of the device (in good working order).
