RAS Mailing Lists

RAS makes use of mailing lists hosted by groups.io. Mailing lists are the primary way for the RAS leadership team to communicate with RAS members and for members to communicate with each other. Note that these mailing lists may contain many subscribers, and replies to messages sent on the list generally will go to everyone on that list. So think twice before posting or responding to an email to be sure you intend for a resonse to go to everyone.

RAS makes use of the following lists:

  • ras@ras.groups.io: General mailing list for RAS community. It is open to both members and non-members, though of course, we encourage everyone to join our society. This list currently has 375+ subscribers, so be aware that if you respond to the list, everyone will see it. Signups (and public archives) can be found at @ ras.groups.io/g/ras/topics.

  • announce@ras.groups.io: RAS official announcements only. This list has much lower traffic than the discussion list and is intended for those who only want to receive announcements of upcoming events. The RAS monthy Newsletter is sent out to this list. Signups (and public archives) can be found at @ ras.groups.io/g/announce/topics.

  • ras-board@groups.io: Mailing list for reaching the board. Anyone can send mail to the board list, but membership is limited to the serving board members.

  • ras-bap@groups.io: Mailing list for those participating in or otherwised interested in the Breeders Award Program (BAP). Good place to ask questions and share information about breeding fish, shrimp and snails. All messages are public and archived @ https://ras.groups.io/g/ras-bap/topics

  • ras-hap@groups.io: Mailing list for those participating in or otherwised interested in the Horticulture Award Program (HAP). Good place to ask questions and share information about growing aquatic plants. All messages are public and archived @ https://ras.groups.io/g/ras-hap/topics.

Acceptable Use Policy for RAS mailing lists

Mailing lists are for the use and enjoyment of club members to further the mission of our club.

Possible topics might include fish for sale (and especially for trade!), breeding help, plant help, in search of (ISO), shrimp questions, etc.

You may post images and other content (the list has a limit on posting size though that may come into play).

The list is operated under groups.io, which has extensive documentation about its use. For example, you can elect to receive individual messages, a daily digest, etc. More info can be found at at the groups.io site: Groups.io Help

Some general guidelines for the List include:

  1. Watch your language.

Keep your posts free from profanity and other offensive language and be respectful of each other.

  2. Try to stay on topic.

Postings should be about aquariums, aquatic plant and animal-keeping, RAS matters, or something related. If you feel it is important to post about something that does not fit one of these categories please label it (the subject) as OFF TOPIC. Please keep such posts to a minimum. Replies should be taken Off List.

  3. Do not clog the list with stuff For Sale.

    a) Current RAS members may offer aquarium related things for sale or trade on the list. Non-members should not. Please label any such postings FOR SALE. Limit your for-sale postings to one per week.

    b) When responding to a FOR SALE posting please do so so OFF LIST. Do not use your e-mail program's reply button, because this sends responses to the list.

    c) Reselling (defined as selling items at more than the purchase cost) of items that you did not purchase for your personal use is not permitted.

  4. Trim your posts.

Please highlight and delete from your post or replies as much of the original text as possible. If necessary start a new message to send to the list (using the same subject title) that includes ONLY your reply and not the original message.

  5. No complaints about the mailing list on the mailing list. If you have a complaint about the list, or about a post on the list, DON'T POST your complaint on the list! Direct all questions and complaints about the list to: ras-admin@ras.groups.io. The list administrator(s) will follow up on any complaints - Off List.
